Shooting Range History
I can remember sitting in the “Trap House”, hand loading “Birds” for my father and his friends in the early 50’s, . They took turns at the “Lever”, hand cocking the trap and “Pulling” it on the command. My reward was the privilege of one round of trap per weekend...but I had to buy my own shells. The little Winchester single barrel .410 using 2 1/2 inch cases and 7 1/2 shot was no match for this game, so when I would break 10 or so, out of the lot, I thought I had just won the world!
The occasional weekend “shoots” at the ranch, evolved into a more formal pattern and by the early 1960’s the “Scatter Gun Club” was born, featuring “Official” Skeet and Trap with automatic electric machines! Under the enthusiastic supervision and guidance of Col. H. S. Halstead and the Hon. Joe Burkett, Jr., the club flourished. In the mid 60’s, the club was taken over by the membership and operated as the “Hill Country Gun Club” until January 1st, 2000 and has since laid “Dormant”.
The facility reopens this year as a public shooting facility under the management of the Burkett family. On the drawing board are five official Skeet fields, five official Trap fields & three Sporting Clays courses of different configurations. Its new face closely follows the traditional English Shooting Ground format with clubhouse and landscaping to be added in time.
Located at White Deer Preserve, home of the Burkett’s and home of The Best Hunting Co, Inc. the hours of operation are from sunup until sundown daily, by reservations only. Corporate, Family & Business groups are welcome.
